Ecology Field Surveyor/Assistant Ecology Consultant
We understand how difficult it can be to get a foot in the door – and we want to do all we can to help budding ecologists take their first steps in this very exciting career.
We also recognise that some existing ecologists may want or need a different way of working and flexibility in the amount and type of work they take on.
As such for 2024 we are offering two different entry-level opportunities which may also suit those with some experience as well:
- Ecology Field Surveyor (variable rate depending on experience)
This is a flexible role allowing you to assist the TG Tribe with survey work while having some of the same benefits as a fixed-term role. If you are new to the industry then training for surveys will be provided and you will often be shadowing someone else from the TG Tribe allowing you to learn lots about ecology and the industry. This role is for someone who is passionate about working outside and learning more about British ecology in the field. It could also suit candidates with field experience who are looking for a wider range of work or opportunities. Whilst you won’t be required to attend our offices or undertake desk-based work regularly, you are still a part of the Tribe and we will encourage you to come and spend time with the team. This is a role that will suit someone who isn’t looking for a fixed commitment, to enable them to fit surveys around studies, other work, or life/caring commitments. We are looking for field surveyors based across our four main regions in England:
- South West/Wales;
- South East
- Midlands
- North
- Assistant Ecology Consultant £23,750 pro rata per annum
(plus £3,000 HCLA if London based)
This is a 6 month fixed term contract where you will work within one of our regional ecology teams. You will work a 4-day work week (Mon-Thurs) and as well as assisting on some surveys and gaining great field experience you will be supporting our consultants in desk based work such as helping with desk studies, QGIS, Biodiversity Net Gain metrics, client advice and project management. For around two days per week, we like to be in the office or have face-to-face contact with our colleagues on-site, because we know from experience that some of the most valuable learning is unscheduled and comes from being right in the middle of the action. We also love being with each other and having a good chat about projects, home life and what we are all dreaming of. This is a role that would suit someone who may have some field experience (although not essential) and is keen to develop their consultancy skills. We are looking for assistants to be based in our four main regional offices:
- Birmingham;
- Bristol;
- London; and
- Manchester
In both roles you can expect to spend time away from home, including overnight stays, to visit sites across the country and you should be a confident and competent driver with a full driving licence.
For both roles, we would like you to:
- Have evidence of the right to work in the UK;
- Consider yourself to be a proactive team player;
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills; and
- Have an awareness of the legislation governing ecological practices.
For the Assistant role, we will also be looking for candidates who:
- Hold an academic qualification in ecology or biological sciences;
- Have experience in software including MS Office, Magic Interactive Map, and QGIS;
- Have excellent report writing skills; and
- Are interested in gaining individual species licences or have a specific technical interest within ecology.
Here at TG, we do this sort of interview in a unique way.
If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to a day in our Birmingham office, where we will use a range of ways to ensure we see you at your best and you also get to see lots of us and decide if TG is the right place for you. This assessment day will be held on 11th January 2024.
